Inspiration and advice from our blog...
We want your wedding to be the day you have always dreamed about. Take a look at our articles with loads of tips, hints and useful information from our trusted suppliers.
Below is a general update from Cambridgeshire Registration Service. Customer Contact As always at this time of year we are experiencing a very busy time post-Christmas with ceremony booking enquiries, both for this year and several years ahead, and it seems timely to issue a few reminders to help us to help the customers we share: We recommend that when talking to customers, you advise them that the sooner they book with us (which they can do as soon as they have decided on a potential date with yourselves provided they are legally free to marry / form a civil partnership) the more likely it is that the time they want will be available. We already have bookings going in for 2019 /2020! As we take bookings so far in advance people booking at relatively short notice (for example for peak season Saturdays this year) are understandably sometimes disappointed with the times still available, but we have to deal with customers on a first come first served basis. When discussing with your customers please encourage them to be flexible around the times that work for you too. On the booking form (available on http://www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/info/20103/ceremonies/17/marriage_and_civil_partnership_ceremonies), it gives the opportunity to give […]

It’s approaching that special day… Valentine’s Day. We thought that we would put together 50 strange and wonderful proposal ideas for those people who like to do things a little differently. Enjoy… 1. Choose a favourite place—whether it’s a fountain, hotel rooftop, monument or national park—that has personal significance to the two of you. Once you’re there, ask someone nearby to take a picture of you together, and instead of posing, drop down on one knee. 2. Have a choir, brass band or drum line show up for a surprise performance of your fiance-to-be’s favourite love song in a park or public location for your proposal. For a really personal touch, ask the performers if they can incorporate your fiance’s name into the lyrics. 3. Get in touch with the stage manager of your favourite production and propose after the cast’s curtain call. Call ahead and see if you can have a special note or ad placement added into the playbill, so you have a keepsake of the proposal. 4. Arrange a surprise proposal with a street caricaturist. Have the caricaturist sketch a picture of you two with word bubbles that say, “Will you marry me?” and “Yes!” 5. Ask […]

Wine tasting & selection
1) How much wine do you need for your wedding reception? You can estimate pouring around 5 glasses of wine per bottle and 6 glasses for Champagne poured into flutes. As a rough guide, assume each guest will consume about half a bottle of wine (then add a little for a safety margin). It’s better to have too much rather than too little. 2) How to choose wines to fit with the Season and time of day Warming, fuller-bodied wines are perfect for Winter Weddings (Full-bodied Chardonnays, oak matured Shiraz or Cabernet Sauvignon). Summer Weddings call for lighter, more refreshing wine styles (Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Chablis or Rosé and Pinot Noir or a Spanish Garnacha). If your Wedding ‘Breakfast’ is at lunchtime, then people often prefer wines that are lighter in style – anything too alcoholic and you’ll find half of the room nodding off in the afternoon. 3) How to choose a wine for the toast It’s customary to serve sparkling wine for the toast. Many couples choose Champagne, but there are loads of other superb sparkling wines that you may prefer. For a lighter alternative, try Prosecco from Italy. 4) How to pair your wines with food […]
Naomi & Simon’s Blue Theme
PHOTOGRAPHY Courtesy of White Gold Photography My brief for yesterday was pretty much one word FUN! Naomi and Simon planned a fantastic outdoor wedding at Sheene Mill in Royston, right on the Hertfordshire/Cambridgeshire border and they wanted a really relaxed day. The weather looked a bit iffy to begin with, but cleared enough for the ok on the ceremony being in the garden. Naomi had based their theme around teal blue, from the pale teal of the cake to the gorgeous dark teal and iridescences of the peacock feathers that run through all the finishing touches, including the button holes, cake topper and bridesmade Amy or feather duster as it quickly became known. This was brilliantly complimented with nods’ to Simon’s love of golf, and golf balls and marker flags were also in evidence. Every one had an amazing day at this beautiful old mill, from the ceremony to the first dance it was all about the love and laughter of family and friends helping this lovely couple celebrate their very special day.
Open bars… yes or no?
One of the biggest questions we get at The Sheene Mill is whether the bridal couple should have an open bar or not? There is no simple answer to this question. The answer will depend on several things, including: Budget Size of Wedding Expectation Day of the week Accommodation of your guests Evening Buffet The most important of all the above is budget. If there isn’t room within your budget to have an open bar then the answer is quite simple. If this is the case then consider putting slightly more wine on the tables during the meal so that your guests don’t feel hard done to when they only get half a bottle. Tips on choosing wine for the table. If you have room in your budget for an open bar but have no idea how much this could cost you then consider doing the following: Limit / restrict open bar to a set amount Limit open bar to a certain time Restrict the types of drinks made available You may find that for a 100 guest wedding a £1000 bar tab will go a long way and ensure that all of your guests get at least 1 free […]
Time to get creative
When you’re passionate about something and live your every day life being true to this then what better way to style your Wedding than incorporating this passion. Our beautiful first Wedding couple for 2015, Elaina and JD, love to use locally sourced produce and keep everything as organic as possible. On their Wedding day which was a crisp February day they had spent the run up to their day making center pieces of origami flowers and beeswax candles. The time and effort that had gone into these designs was a tribute to their love for each other and complimented their day in the most perfect way – every detail told a story and every detail was bespoke to their own story. With so many options of how to style your Wedding, it is always satisfying when you have something original and personal to yourselves. The simplest of designs can make a huge impact and can be made on the smallest of budgets allowing you to completely transform a table. Have a look at what other couples have done using Pinterest or shop around some local stores and suppliers to see what quirky detail you can incorporate from your home town. Think […]
Sheene Mill: As Seen On Channel 4
Couple’s heartwarming wedding tale is subject of Channel 4 documentary The documentary, called ‘The Wedding Day’, will air the day before Valentine’s Day ‘The Wedding Day’ documentary will be shown on Channel 4 on Monday, February 13, from 10-11pm. A SNEAK PREVIEW OF THE WEDDING DAY The heartwarming story of a woman who took on a picturesque wedding venue her parents had run, and later married her husband there, will be the subject of a new television documentary. Serena Jordan (previously Saunders) took over the Sheene Mill, a stunning 17th century mill in Melbourn, four years ago after her parents divorced in 2006 and the mill ended up in administration. The 28-year-old, who said she was “pretty much raised waiting tables”, said the decision to take on the venue was easy as the building is close to her heart. The tale of the venue take-over, and the wedding, will now be the subject of a Channel 4 documentary, called ‘The Wedding Day’, which will air the day before Valentine’s Day. Serena told the News : “Being a building close to my heart, my partner Adam Jordan and I decided to take on the Sheene Mill ourselves. “Four years later and […]

If it’s good enough for the Queen… it’s good enough for the Sheene!
We are delighted to welcome Aubrey Allen (the butcher appointed by Her Majesty the Queen) to the Sheene Mill team. Let’s read a little more about them… We’re a family business, established in 1933, and we understand that providing the best meat from gate to plate is more important than marketing promises. Our reputation has been built on our uncompromising commitment to provenance, fair trade with farmers and especially sourcing the finest Scotch beef. Our time consuming dry ageing process for beef has been perfected and we know it is the only way to develop the texture and flavour of the product; our relationship with all our suppliers has developed so far over the years that the top 5% of their yield is reserved for us and so for you. Our team of Master Butchers work with chefs on our menu inspiration days to develop new products in our independently assessed cutting plant where hygiene is paramount. Our staff, many of whom have stayed with us for over 20 years, share and understand our family philosophy of integrity and experience over the fast buck and quick fixes. We are proud that successful restaurants nationwide rely on Aubrey Allen meat but […]
Create a Signature Cocktail for Your Wedding Your reception menu is set and the cake design is picked. It’s time to focus on drinks. Add a personal touch to your bar menu by choosing a signature cocktail. Pick a drink that stars your favorite liquor, matches your color scheme, or just sounds delicious.
