Rain… We’ve got it covered!
Well the Summer in 2016 doesn’t appear to have fully arrived yet. So the big question all Brides out there will be thinking is… what happens if it rains on my big day? The first thing to remember is that a drop of rain shouldn’t spoil any of your day. At Sheene Mill we do have a marquee to cover all your guests and you are covered in the pavilion of course. Also it is very unusual for a rain shower to last more than a few minutes at a time which means that it is possible to dodge the clouds with your timings. To hire our marquee we always require 72 hours notice and charges apply. We believe that the marquee is a beautiful addition to a wedding and fits in well with the beauty of the venue. There are also other options you can consider for a wet wedding such as supplying your guests with wellies, white umbrellas and a mac – what a great photo opportunity! Ultimately the registrar has the final say as to whether the ceremony can be conducted outdoors or not. Fortunately at Sheene Mill we have the ability to move your ceremony indoors with […]
The WOW moment
When we first received this photograph from Phil Lynch we nearly broke the internet. The response and praise was incredible. But as Phil will tell you, this isn’t a simple point and click photo opportunity. It’s always good to have an idea of the style of photography for your big day and some examples to hand to your photographer always helps. This gives your photographer the best opportunity to get the shot and equipment needed setup ready. For this particular shot Phil had multiple flashes positioned behind the bride and groom to ensure they were lit up with minimal shadows. To get a general all round focus across the trees multiple shots were stitched together electronically to ensure everything looked crisp. When the raw image is ready there is then always some touching up to do on PhotoShop. Highlighting the night sky, twinkling lights in the trees and ensuring the vibrant colours of the garden lighting were all key parts of making this photograph what it is. Quick Fire Wedding Planning Tips
Wouldn’t it be nice to have someone on call 24/7 in the run up to your Wedding to let you know what you should be doing and when, to have them haggle the best price for your Wedding flowers, to tell you where to get the most amazing cake from and to near enough do everything and anything that is remotely linked to Weddings? Well unfortunately for some or should I say the majority of us, we don’t have this luxury so we have to rely on good ol’ common sense, the world wide web and our trusted friends and family. To help you along the way, here’s a few thoughts to get you going and to give you even more to think about. 1. Set your budget – know your limits, don’t splurge for the sake of it We all know Weddings aren’t the cheapest things in the world and as much as you try to be strict with yourselves when you decide to pay an extra £100.00 for the photographer to stay for your first dance and an extra 50p for cute little favours and extra money behind the bar for everyone to get even more drunk on […]

Create a Signature Cocktail for Your Wedding Your reception menu is set and the cake design is picked. It’s time to focus on drinks. Add a personal touch to your bar menu by choosing a signature cocktail. Pick a drink that stars your favorite liquor, matches your color scheme, or just sounds delicious. A bonus for the budget-conscious: You can save on the drink tab by offering wine, beer, champagne, and just the signature cocktail, rather than a full bar. Most good venues will allow you to create a signature cocktail with enough notice. At The Sheene Mill will take great pleasure in doing a little something different to make your day perfect. Here are a few ideas to get you thinking… Cranberry Kiss Follow your first kiss as husband and wife with a delicious Cranberry Kiss. Spiced and sweet-tart, this Captain Morgan rum and cranberry cocktail gets a lift from a dash of collins mix. Sparkling Sangria Tradicional Sangria, a punchlike concoction made with sweetened red wine and fresh fruit, is perfect for summer weddings. Have the bar prepare this celebratory variation, which includes champagne. Smirnoff No. 21 Pomegranate Martini This signature cocktail is the perfect marriage […]
Naomi & Simon’s Blue Theme
PHOTOGRAPHY Courtesy of White Gold Photography My brief for yesterday was pretty much one word FUN! Naomi and Simon planned a fantastic outdoor wedding at Sheene Mill in Royston, right on the Hertfordshire/Cambridgeshire border and they wanted a really relaxed day. The weather looked a bit iffy to begin with, but cleared enough for the ok on the ceremony being in the garden. Naomi had based their theme around teal blue, from the pale teal of the cake to the gorgeous dark teal and iridescences of the peacock feathers that run through all the finishing touches, including the button holes, cake topper and bridesmade Amy or feather duster as it quickly became known. This was brilliantly complimented with nods’ to Simon’s love of golf, and golf balls and marker flags were also in evidence. Every one had an amazing day at this beautiful old mill, from the ceremony to the first dance it was all about the love and laughter of family and friends helping this lovely couple celebrate their very special day.
Below is a general update from Cambridgeshire Registration Service. Customer Contact As always at this time of year we are experiencing a very busy time post-Christmas with ceremony booking enquiries, both for this year and several years ahead, and it seems timely to issue a few reminders to help us to help the customers we share: We recommend that when talking to customers, you advise them that the sooner they book with us (which they can do as soon as they have decided on a potential date with yourselves provided they are legally free to marry / form a civil partnership) the more likely it is that the time they want will be available. We already have bookings going in for 2019 /2020! As we take bookings so far in advance people booking at relatively short notice (for example for peak season Saturdays this year) are understandably sometimes disappointed with the times still available, but we have to deal with customers on a first come first served basis. When discussing with your customers please encourage them to be flexible around the times that work for you too. On the booking form (available on http://www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/info/20103/ceremonies/17/marriage_and_civil_partnership_ceremonies), it gives the opportunity to give […]
The secret behind a successful event?

Quote SMMM10 when booking. Event planning is not rocket science, but it requires an acute organisation and constant attention to detail. If everything goes off without a hitch, it often goes without notice, but if something goes awry, it’s a public display of failure. Planning is key, good food is a given, great music is essential… and helping your guests laugh and have fun is vital to the success of any party or Wedding! We often hear people saying I am looking for that WOW factor and our NEW mirror booth certainly does that, as well as creating some Magic. ‘Selfies’ have been all the rage for some time, but this brings a new twist to the concept – the fully animated mirror not only takes your photos and prints but also has a fun randomised response direct from the ‘talking mirror’. After each shot the mirror responds with […]
Wine tasting & selection
1) How much wine do you need for your wedding reception? You can estimate pouring around 5 glasses of wine per bottle and 6 glasses for Champagne poured into flutes. As a rough guide, assume each guest will consume about half a bottle of wine (then add a little for a safety margin). It’s better to have too much rather than too little. 2) How to choose wines to fit with the Season and time of day Warming, fuller-bodied wines are perfect for Winter Weddings (Full-bodied Chardonnays, oak matured Shiraz or Cabernet Sauvignon). Summer Weddings call for lighter, more refreshing wine styles (Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Chablis or Rosé and Pinot Noir or a Spanish Garnacha). If your Wedding ‘Breakfast’ is at lunchtime, then people often prefer wines that are lighter in style – anything too alcoholic and you’ll find half of the room nodding off in the afternoon. 3) How to choose a wine for the toast It’s customary to serve sparkling wine for the toast. Many couples choose Champagne, but there are loads of other superb sparkling wines that you may prefer. For a lighter alternative, try Prosecco from Italy. 4) How to pair your wines with food […]

Bands Vs DJ’s
No doubt about it: Music can make or break a wedding celebration. It’s the heart and soul of a reception and can send your guests home with happy feet — or pained grimaces! The fact that you want to hire a talented band or fleet-fingered DJ is a given. Finding one is a matter of polling friends, surfing online, shopping around with fine-tuned ears, and making a move quickly — top talent can get booked up to a year in advance. What type of entertainment suits your personal taste, budget, space allowances, guest demographics, and killer dance moves best? Keep an open mind, and consider these issues to start your search. Vibe The type of music you choose can set the tone of your wedding and solidify a theme. And remember, it’s the thing people most often remember. Think about what musical genre best reflects your personalities and inspires the ambience you want to create: Groovy funk or subdued string quartet? Swanky swing or kick-off-your-shoes-and-sweat zydeco? The way the music is delivered — by live band or DJ — also affects the ambience. The type of music you choose may dictate the choice too — big band sounds are generally […]

My Wife and I recently had dinner at the Sheen Mill. It is many years since we last went there. I must say that it was an excellent experience. The food was amazing absolutely fine dining. Good selection of wine for all budgets. All of the staff were 100% on top of their game, and for sure they had all been trained to a high standard which reflected on their performance. We will be back very soon. Mrs. Den P (Saffron Walden)
Absolutely fabulous! The staff were extremely attentive, the food was incredible and the grounds were lovely. Definitely will go back. Mrs. Tara K (Oundle)
It had been ten years since we went to The Sheene Mill. We were greeted warmly by the current owner in a warm and friendly manner that you would expect with this type of Restaurant. Service and quality were excellent, a little “rest” time in-between the starter and the main which was cooked to perfection and exactly as we had asked for it. if you want to be spoilt this is the place to do it. Mr Justin Casemate (Cambridge)
All members of staff were polite and attentive. Now for the food. We had ordered 2 mains and 2 desserts. My wifes meal was lamb rump and was perfect. She said the best she had ever tasted. I had a piece of the lamb and had to agree. I had the pork which could not be faulte. My dessert of raspberry tart was very good and my wifes cheese board was one of the best we have ever been served. We will be returning many times. Camtrek (Cambridge)
We went to the Sheene Mill to celebrate my daughters birthday. There were five of us and we all had a fantastic meal. Presentation of the table was lovely, staff very attentive and food fabulous. Would highly recommend, especially for a special occasion. Lovely setting and very individual. Hadhams78 (Hertfordshire)
My party was the 25th July. This venue was superb. A big thank you to Emma who organised everything. The food was superb, the venue lovely, especially at night, lovely gardens. The staff were excellent. I have had so many comments from my guests on what a fantastic day. Thank you Sheene Mill for making this a very special day for me. Mrs Julie Lean (Cambridge)
Was taken for Sunday lunch with friends, a warm greeting meet us on arrival and we were shown to the conservatory, unfortunately on our visit the weather was bad and so we could not appreciate full elegance of this setting. To sum up a modern day presentation of old school elegance and excellent service in a gorgeous setting. Top marks to chef Ivor Morgan and the young serving team. Jabba1965 (Biggleswade)
We had an intimate family wedding here in June. It was wonderful. The food was fantastic – Lamb with dauphinoise potatoes, perfectly tender! The setting was beautiful – fantastic gardens. And to top it all off the staff couldn’t be nicer! The hotel and restaurant are a recipe for success. Thank you to all the team, you have given us memories to treasure for the rest of our lives! Mrs Rebecca S (Hertfordshire)
We used the Sheene Mill for our works do. The venue was great and helped me organise a 3 course meal with a Champagne reception outside over looking the water. Great food and lovely setting. L4ur4852 (Cambridgeshire)
My wife & I booked a table for lunch to celebrate our 25th Wedding Anniversary following a recommendation from friends. The service was excellent, but not intrusive, and the food was delicious. Both were beautifully cooked. Also the setting of the mill added to a very enjoyable lunch. We will certainly be visiting again. Nickpa67 (Walkern)
We visited this extraordinary venue yesterday for a lunchtime meal with family and friends. The star though was the meal and the service. The meal was one of the best I have ever had.The food was delicious, and the attention to detail wonderful. The service was really top class – friendly and atentive but not intrusive. We do not live close but will definitely be back – really hughly recommended. Mrs Jeannie K (Carshalton)
Confident about the quality of service and food, we took friends here last weekend for a Saturday evening dinner. We were not let down, great hospitality super service and quality food as usual. Everything is prepared fresh and cooked to order. The restaurant is going from strength to strengtH. Getabout01 (Cambridge)
Following the death of my darling husband I wanted to ensure his funeral/life celebration was something special. On the day the food was delicious and plentiful, the setting perfect, the staff attentive without being “in your face”, the room was set up just as asked for with the bits I had wanted placed on the tables. I would not hesitate to recommend. CambridgePudding (Cambridge)
We arranged a surprise afternoon tea for my mother who was 90. The food was super and the tea and coffee just kept on coming. The attention to detail was excellent and the staff were very attentive. I wouldn’t hesitate in going again and thoroughly recommend it to anyone who wishes for a dream location for any event. VALERIE880 (Cambridge)
Our wedding last month exceeded our expectations, and everything about The Sheene Mill made it a truly magical day for us, from the chic and elegant interiors, to the amazing food, and the wonderful staff. As a wedding venue, we give The Sheene Mill our highest recommendation. Esianr (Cambridge)
Went for a friend’s 40th Birthday treat and could not have been more impressed. I went for one of the specials which had ingredients I am not usually fond of. However, I was very pleasantly surprised, it was delicious and cooked to perfection! Flavour combinations you could never have imagined all presented beautifully and served by fantastic waiting staff. I love, love, loved it and can’t wait to go back!!! CARSALS (Hitchin)
Sheene Mill hosted the Wake after my fathers funeral. From the initial enquiry to the end we were treated with such care and attention to detail. Once I had decided on afternoon tea and wine the whole event was organised very professionally. Everyone was delighted with a warm welcome from the staff and impressed with the food wine and service. An emotional day in a wonderful setting. Sarah W (Cambridge)
I have been to the Sheene Mill a few times and never have a bad word to say about it. The staff are always friendly and helpful. There is also a great selection of food and drink; it makes it the perfect place for a special occasion (they were great helping me organise my best friend’s hen do) or just a nice meal out. The beautiful grounds are also a big plus point. I would highly recommend this restaurant to my friends and family.
We went to Sheene Mill on Christmas Eve for a birthday celebration. We have been many times before and it has always been lovely but the food this time was eve better than usual. Our waiter Sigmar, was charming as usual and helped make it a really special occasion. Definitely one of the best in the Cambridge area. Judy G (Cambridge)
We visited Sheene Mill last night, 22 November had a fantastic time, great food, excellent staff and a good night all round. Ian P (Welwyn)
Myself my partner and another couple went for dinner at the Sheene mill this weekend and had a fab meal. The staff are always very friendly and attentive. The atmosphere was lovely and the food was delicious. We had such a lovely evening and were made to feel so welcome we didnt want to leave. Will be coming back very soon! Francesca R (Cambridgeshire)
My friends and I visited the Sheene Mill for a midweek lunch. We were lucky with the weather and were able to sit out on the deck for our meal which was perfect as there were 4 ladies and 4 buggies so plenty of space! There was a set lunch menu which was very good value and offered a good selection of dishes! I will definitely be returning. HelenaM83 (Cambridge)
The grounds are stunning and the hotel is full of character. We finished the evening off with a pot of coffee at 12.30am in the snug after an evening of dancing. The rooms are lovely with fantastic views over the gardens (you just have to watch your head with the low beams!). If you are considering The Sheene Mill as a wedding venue , then look no further, it was perfect for us. Hadhams78 (Hertfordshire)
Had the most amazing wedding day at The Sheene Mill, the staff were just fantastic. Serena and Jordan went above and beyond with being so helpful and caring. It truly was a dream come true, the venue is so beautiful and Emma made sure the whole day ran smoothly and took all the stress away. I am just so glad I had such a fabulous venue for my fairytale wedding!! Thank you xx
If anyone wishes to book a wedding, you cannot go wrong in choosing this hotel. The location is perfect, splendid setting by a river. The food they supplied was fantastic, the conservatory was nicely decorated and Emma and her crew worked really hard to give us a fantastic wedding reception for our son and his new wife. Very well done to one and all. 10 out of 10. Alan N (Dereham)
Thank you to Emma, John, Jose and all the team who worked tirelessly and cheerfully to give us a magical wedding day. Our requirements were unusual – 17 guests for the ceremony and around 90 in the evening for the party. Many venues wouldn’t consider our request; the Sheene Mill accommodated perfectly and gave the best food! So glad we chose the Sheene Mill and wishing you continued success.
Really enjoyed a weekend stay there recently; the rooms, food, grounds are beautiful! Just as important, the staff were very helpful and friendly, nothing seemed a problem to them to try to accommodate your wishes. I certainly recommend the place and with family in the area, it will be my first option when i go back to the area in future. Just wish i could have stayed longer! stevebarr2015 (Coventry)
Lovely hotel in a peaceful setting; we were greeted by friendly and professional staff on our arrival. We then enjoyed a great nights rest and a delicious breakfast in the morning. Only stayed for one night but would have happily stopped off for more if time allowed. Highly recommended. Mr G (London)
Stayed for one night. Staff incredibly friendly, lovely room with a great view. Spacioos, comfortable beds and very clean. The food was great, quick service and high calibre, just what I needed! Would definitely stay again and plan to in the not too distant future!
I stayed here for one night with some friends. Had a great time, lovely food and the staff were really very friendly. Try and visit during the afternoon and enjoy the stunning scenery. Would recommend and will definately be coming back. Might even bring the wife. amiakeyorasemikey (London)
Normally I only visit the Sheene Mill at weekends but as I’ve always had such a great experience I took some clients, and once again the whole experience was throughly enjoyable. Thanks to all the staff for their help to make the evening go so smoothly! Kipz (Northamptonshire)
We stayed here for one night and had dinner and breakfast. All the staff were friendly and in the morning breakfast was spot on too, all high quality produce again cooked well. The room we stayed in was comfortable and big enough with a beautiful view over the gardens, couldn’t fault it. german_kermit (UK)
Have been eating at the Mill for over 25 years, a most beautiful setting which the current owners are making the most of with some very tasteful out door lighting and investment of monies on this quaint property of a bygone age, often see king fishers and asbo the lovely swan, great lunch time snacks, well presented well worth making a detour for. 891Timi (Cambridgeshire)
This was my second visit and both times had a great stay and love it there and staff make it. Greeted as per last time by a friendly girl who couldn’t do enough to help. Even remembered me from previous year. Everything is brilliant, comfy rooms can’t complain. Breakfast excellent as was the food which I sampled last time :). Keep up the good work and see you on my next business trip to royston. Peter H (Heysham)
We booked a table for 11 ladies for my best friends baby shower and it was perfect, Sheene mill could not have been more helpful or accommodating to us. On arrival we had our own waiter who looked after us, offered drinks on arrival and moved the tables in the conservatory to suit and added extra sided table for us. Would definitely recommend for any sophisticated party. Katie_marie1984 (Cambridge)
Superb and helpful check in-had a few drinks in the beautiful surroundings -staff very amiable and chatty-felt like being in a friends home rather than hotel-retired too our lovely spacious room too get ready for the evening event-food was amazing -taking into account the catering was for 100 or so it was delicious-the 80s band were amazing dance floor packed. Cant wait too go back!!! Debbie K (London)
Wonderful setting and location, atmospheric especially at night when the ambient lighting is on. Open fires and coziness a plenty. Staff great and nothing too much trouble – even finding a you tube demonstration on how to tie a cravat! The old mill pond is staggering at night with clever lighting . Les M (Cambridge)
We had a great time at Sheene Mill and the food was amazing. Sieg was very attentive and welcoming. The garden is beautiful especially on a summer’s evening. I love the fish dishes. I would definetly recommend it and we will go again soon. Thank you! tammylucy (Huntingdon)
This was a most charming and pleasant surprise, all of the staff were helpful, courteous and pleasant right down to the KP. The food was fabulous – beautifully presented, well cooked and served with pride. The accommodation its self was a great place to relax, chill out and offered an ideal spring board into Cambridge or surrounding countryside for a variety of activities. Andy L (Maidstone)
I just wanted to write to say a rather belated but massive thank you for everything you did to make our wedding the best day ever. We had a fantastic time, and we couldn’t have done it without all your advice and help on the day, and of course in all your detail and organising in the run up to the big event.
